Al-Kuwait SC have terminated the contract of former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, after just four months.
The club announced Mikel’s exit in a post on its verified Twitter account on Thursday night.
The post reads “Termination of the contract of the Nigerian John Mikel Obi”
The 34-year-old joined the Asian club in July after parting ways with Stoke City in England.
Since leaving Chelsea FC in 2016, the former Super Eagles captain has been on a football journey having won the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, two English Premier League and three FA Cup trophies with the London Club.
He joined China’s Tianjin TEDA for one season before returning to England to play for Middlesborough FC.
Afterwards, he linked up with Trabzonspor but left the Turkish club to join Stoke City.
Obi played at all national football levels in his international career for Nigeria.
He represented the Nigeria U-17 team at the 2003 FIFA World Cup and U-20 at the 2005 football Mundial. He then won the silver ball for the second-best player at the tournament (behind Lionel Messi).
He was also a key player for the team coached by the late Stephen Keshi that won the third Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in 2013.
He captained Samson Siasia’s U-23 squad that snatched the bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
Obi retired from international football in 2019, after Nigeria won the AFCON third-place medal.
