Napoli football club has officially renamed its stadium after late Diego Maradona, the club’s legend, who died last month.

The Argentina football icon died on November 25 as a result of cardiac arrest at the age of 60.

The stadium, previously called Studio San Paolo, was changed to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium as a tribute to the late football icon.

The change of name was announced by the Naples-based club in a statement on Friday evening after the city’s council approval of the resolution.

“SSC Napoli is delighted about today’s decision by the Naples City Council to rename the Stadio San Paolo in memory of Diego Armando Maradona,” the statement read.

Fans of the club also had the chance to pay tribute to Maradona during their recent Europa League match at home against Rijeka while the players wore jerseys with “Maradona 10” before the clash.

Maradona spent seven years at Napoli, where he made 188 appearances, scored 81 goals and won the club’s only two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.
