After about six days, the Leadership of Cattle and Foodstuff dealers under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria, on Wednesday, agreed to end the blockade of food trucks and begin the supply of perishable food items from the northern part of the country to southern states.
It was gathered that the agreement was reached when the leadership of the trade union met with Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State in Abuja. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode was also at the meeting.
“The partial suspension was made by the dealers of perishable goods,” a source told TheCable on Wednesday.
About a week ago, northern traders had embarked on strike over the alleged killing of their members in the southern part of the country prompting the prices of food commodities like pepper, tomatoes, beef, yam, garri, amongst others, to skyrocket with many southerners groaning and complaining about the increase.
An official of the union, Awwalu Aliyu, said on Tuesday in Kano that the decision not to supply food to the south was not to starve southerners but to protest attacks on their members.
Aliyu alleged that some members in the south were killed, maimed and lost properties especially during the #EndSARS protest and the recent Shasha market crisis in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
He had said the union preferred that farm produce go to waste rather than tolerate “continued attacks” on its members in the south.
On Monday, the AUFCDN said the Department of State Services (DSS) invited Mohammed Tahir, the union’s president, over the decision to block the delivery of food items from the north to the south.
The northern traders had also urged the Federal Government to pay them billions in compensation while Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere; Activist Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, and others had threatened to launch a campaign against cows in protest against the development.
