The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has certified the safety of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for use in Nigeria.
NAFDAC gave the final approval after last-minute tests were carried out ahead of the vaccine’s launch in Abuja.
The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire made this known at the ongoing launch of the vaccine. He said that the agency approved the vaccine at some minutes past midnight on Friday.
Ehanire said the NAFDAC approval came after the test which lasted about 48 hours following the arrival of the vaccine in Nigeria on Tuesday.
The Minister added that the launch would have been cancelled if the agency did not give the final go-ahead.
“The long-awaited day is here in which Nigerians can now join the global community to be vaccinated against the dreaded COVID-19 virus,” he said.
In the same vein, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency confirmed this development on its Twitter handle, @NphcdaNG, on Friday.
“After undergoing final assessment by NAFDAC, we have confirmation that they have concluded their final checks with positive results.” The message reads
“Nigeria can now go ahead and use the 3.924m doses of AstraZeneca vaccines.
NAFDAC first approved the AstraZeneca vaccine for use in Nigeria on February 18 and when Nigeria took delivery of the vaccine on Tuesday, samples were handed over to NAFDAC for safety review.
The World Health Organisation had also said the vaccine the “must-have” criteria for safety, and its efficacy benefits outweighed its risks.
With this positive result, the NPHCDA can now go ahead with vaccination of Nigerians starting with frontline health workers at the treatment centre of the National Hospital, Abuja.
