Supreme Court affirms Former Taraba State Governor conviction

The Supreme Court on Friday 7th of February 2020 upheld the conviction of Former Governor of Taraba, Jolly Nyame

The former governor was convicted earlier in May 2019 judgment, given on the charge marked: FCT/ABJ/CR/82/07, the trial court convicted Nyame on 27 out of the 41 counts contained in the charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in July 2007.

The Supreme court freed the convicted former governor from paying fine for the financial crime he committed against the state, but maintained that Nyame has to serve the jail terms as stated in the Appeal Court judgement.

Here s a breakdown of the initial judgment that the court upheld:

14 years upon conviction for criminal breach of trust

7 years for receiving gratification

5 years for obtaining valuable public properties without consideration.

2years for criminal misappropriation.
