Jakande To Be Buried Tomorrow

First civilian governor of Lagos state and Elder statesman, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, will be buried tomorrow (Friday), this is according to The PUNCH

This announcement was made by the Committee of Friends of the ex-governor, who passed away on Thursday.

Relatively, one of his sons, Deji, confirmed that Jakande will be buried at 4pm on Friday.

Jakande’s friends in a statement said there would be pre-burial prayers at the deceased residence at the Ilupeju area of Lagos State.

The statement was signed by a former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Abisogun Leigh, Kamal Giwa, Prince Bayo Oshiyemi, Alhaji Gani Owolabi Dada, Mrs. Omolara Abeke Vaugh, and Alhaja Latifat Gbajabiamila.

The statement read, “The committee of friends LKJ first civil Governor of Lagos State wishes to announce the passing of our dear leader the Baba Kekere of Lagos, Alhaji Chief Lateef Kayode Jakande, at the age of 91 years which sad incident happened on Thursday, February 11, 2021

The burial arrangements are as follows – Pre-Burial prayers at number 2 Bishop Street Ilupeju, Lagos State on Friday 12, February 2021 at 9am.

“Interment at Volts and Gardens Ikoyi at 4 pm Friday 12, February 2021.”

Jakande died in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 91.

According to his son, Deji, the ex-governor fondly called Baba Kekere by admirers showed no sign of illness in the last 24 hours and had revalidated his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.

“We thank God for his life. He was not sick. He took his pap and crayfish yesterday. He was stil reading his newspapers without glasses.

“We had stopped visitors from going to him because of COVID-19 because he likes shaking people. Today (yesterday), he was about to take his breakfast. Suddenly, he couldn’t breathe again. We called the doctor to come and examine him. That was between 10.30 am and 11am.

“Many people have been calling. The Governor, the deputy governor, the party chairman had called.

“He will be buried tomorrow after Jumat Service before 4pm at the Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi.”

The former journalist was Lagos State Governor from 1979 to 1983, and later served as Minister of Works under the military government of Gen. Sani Abacha.

His administration as Lagos State Governor left a legacy of massive infrastructure development during his four-year stint especially through numerous Jakande Estates built across the state as well as his sterling investment in education.
